The Kushana Pantheon and Its Representation on Imperial Coins
11.00 Uhr

The dynasty of the Kushans, who ruled parts of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan from the first to the fourth century were responsible for a large and varied coinage. These coins, with their mixture of Western and Eastern elements, have fascinated collectors and historians since the nineteenth century. Two kings in particular, Kanishka and Huvishka, displayed upon their coins a vast pantheon: It contains images from Roman Egypt, Iran, and India, with names from the Greek, Hindu and Zoroastrian traditions and more than twenty different gods. This talk will explore how that numismatic pantheon has been interpreted, what it tells us about ancient religions, and how it reflects official policies.
Introduction: Dr. Johannes Beltz, Curator of Indian Art, Museum Rietberg (In Zusammenarbeit mit der Rietberg-Gesellschaft)
